This CharityScorecard.org site was in use from 2006 to 2008, but is now mostly dormant, and the material here is out of date. The GiveWell project has similar goals and is being actively maintained. I've left the old CharityScorecard.org content here just for the historical record.

Hypothetical Perfect Organization 100%

Goal I'm more interested in giving to organizations that are short on funds than to organizations that have huge endowments. The endowment score uses the Financial Questionnaire to look at organization's net assets vs. its total expenses.
Formula score = (total expenses) / ( (total expenses) + (net assets) )
Example On the FINCA International Financial Questionnaire, total expenses are 51.5 million USD, and net assets are 79.6 million USD, so...
score = $51.1 million / ($51.1 million + $79.6 million) = 39%
Notes Charity Navigator, in their rating system, also looks at an organization's ratio of endowment to expenses, which they call the Working Capital Ratio, described here and here. Charity Navigator gives higher ratings to organizations with more Working Capital, whereas my scorecard gives lower ratings to organizations with large endowments. But Charity Navigator does also criticize organizations that are stockpiling money without expanding their operations: more here.
Give.org, the web site of the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, in their evaluations of organizations, also looks at an organization's ratio of expenses to assets, as item 10 of their 20 Standards for Charity Accountability
